Your PS5 is loud. Or it keeps shutting off mid-game. Or you're getting temperature warnings on screen. Overheating is one of the most common PS5 complaints โ especially on launch units that are now several years old. Here's what's actually going on and what you can do about it.
Why PS5s Overheat
The PS5's custom AMD chip runs hot under load. Sony engineered a substantial cooling system to manage it โ a large heatsink, a variable-speed fan, and liquid metal thermal compound between the chip and heatsink. When any part of that system degrades, temperatures rise.
The Three Main Culprits
1. Dust buildup โ The most common cause by far. The PS5 pulls air in through vents and exhausts it out the back. Over months and years, dust accumulates on the fan blades, heatsink fins, and air intake filters. Even a moderate dust layer significantly reduces airflow and cooling efficiency.
2. Degraded liquid metal thermal compound โ Sony used liquid metal (instead of traditional thermal paste) between the APU and heatsink for better heat transfer. Over time โ especially with temperature cycling โ liquid metal can migrate, dry out, or become less effective. When that happens, heat doesn't transfer as efficiently.
3. Poor airflow in the environment โ PS5 crammed into a tight TV cabinet, stacked on top of other devices, or sitting in an enclosed entertainment center with nowhere for hot air to escape. The PS5 needs clearance on all sides.
What You Can Do at Home
- Clean the vents: Use compressed air to blow out the vents from the outside. Remove the faceplates (they snap off) and blow out the internal fan area.
- Check placement: Give the PS5 at least 4 inches of clearance on all sides. Don't stack anything on top of it. Don't put it in an enclosed cabinet.
- Vertical vs. horizontal: Some users report better thermals in one orientation over the other. Try switching if overheating persists.
When You Need Professional Service
If cleaning the vents doesn't help, or if the PS5 is shutting down consistently, it likely needs:
- Deep internal cleaning: The heatsink fins and fan need to be cleaned from the inside, which requires disassembly.
- Liquid metal reapplication: The existing liquid metal needs to be removed, the surfaces cleaned, and fresh liquid metal or high-quality thermal paste applied. This is the most effective fix for chronic overheating in older PS5s.
Can Overheating Cause Permanent Damage?
Yes. Sustained high temperatures degrade solder joints, accelerate electromigration in chips, and can cause capacitors to fail early. The PS5's thermal protection shuts the console down before hitting catastrophic temps โ but repeated thermal shutdowns mean the problem is getting worse over time, not better. Address it sooner rather than later.
PS5 Slim Overheating
The PS5 Slim runs cooler than the original model due to a revised chip process, but it's not immune. The same principles apply โ keep the vents clear, give it airflow, and get it serviced if it shuts down from heat.
